The process of making an image is a journey for Penny.
In her drawings the paper is covered in a mantle of charcoal and the image is drawn out of the darkened background with an eraser, much as the order of life comes out of the chaos of nothingness.
The works on paper cross the boundaries between the media of painting, printmaking and textiles to create collages that include silk fabrics, hand-made flax papers, wire, hand-made silk paper, and canvas. They are a story board, the format being a reflection of the journeys made in our lives.
Her images convey a stillness, a place of quiet contemplation and rest in a world that she experiences as being in constant change. They come from observations made on journeys through the southern landscapes and cityscapes of New Zealand and the format used is a reflection of these passages. They are a reference to the spaces and places in the environment in which she lives.
She exhibits throughout New Zealand and overseas, and has work in local, national and overseas collections. |
