Joe a perspicacious observer of Dunedin in all its moods and caprices. She records her neighbourhood in often humorous detail, the traffic, motorway signage, houses and domestic details as spied and interpreted by her. Close observation inspires her paintings whether her city-scapes or her famous portraits and we view these works appreciating her attention to detail and meticulous patterning. Both her delicate shaded portraits set against intricate patterned wallpapers, surfaces and curtains, and her landscapes and cityscapes, have a curious flat serenity.
