Siau-Jiun Lim is a Dunedin-based artist whose work explores the connection between people and the environment. She holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours) and is a recipient of the Con Hutton Scholarship. Several of her works are held in the Wallace Arts Trust collection. Originally from Malaysia, and now living in New Zealand for over 20 years, she brings together her cultural roots with the colours and landscapes of Aotearoa, reflecting its strong environmental ethos.
Siau-Jiun employs various materials in her art, including acrylics, inks, pastels, and wax. She often experiments with different mark-making techniques using natural elements like recycled materials, feathers, and leaves. Her artworks reflect her daily practices and community projects, blending these experiences into her artistic expression. Siau-Jiun actively participates in community projects and collaborative exhibitions.
She is inspired by artists like Joan Mitchell, Wolf Kahn, Henri Matisse, Willem de Kooning and Cecily Brown, especially in their use of bold colours and captivating compositions. She believes that art represents the interconnectedness of all living things, the balance between chaos and order, and the subconscious and intentional mind.
